What do the teachers and teaching assistants who have attended our courses recently think about the course?
- "Excellent pace, demonstrations and explanations. I look forward to using the skills I have learned in enhancing the lives of children who lack reading/spelling skills and self-confidence. Thanks - an excellent programme."
Sounds-Write is a quality first phonics programme and is acknowledged by the DfE as meeting all its criteria for an effective phonics teaching programme - see our entry on the DfE site for details. It is an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading, spelling and writing. Our very highly-rated, intensive courses have now been attended by over ten thousand classroom practitioners, educational psychologists and members of local authority support teams. The programme is already being used extensively in primary and secondary schools throughout Britain, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, Australia, Zambia and Papua New Guinea. We are also now on Facebook.
"I recommend Sounds-Write to every teacher
and school leader I meet. At St. George’s, where deprivation levels
are extremely high, we achieve consistently outstanding results in
all phases. Our Phonics Screening Check has been 96%+ every year.
Sounds-Write is a brilliant phonics programme for all pupils from
Nursery but it also enables us to teach pupils with no English, or
with specific learning difficulties so that no gaps exist in
performance within year groups. It is a superb scheme for teaching
polysyllabic spelling right through to Year 6. The training is top
quality and all staff use consistent methods to teach phonics,
reading and spelling effectively. Skills are taught explicitly and
pupils demonstrate confidence and success from the outset. Progress
is rapid and the quality of writing from Reception onwards
astonishes visitors from other schools."
Janet Hilary, Headteacher and National Leader of Education
Mel Crean of Top Notch Teaching recently posted a long review/overview of our programme and resources. It contains so many useful insights that we decided to ask Mel if we could post the entire piece on our site. She said 'yes', so here is the entire article as a pdf file.
Recently, Jan Hilary spoke at the Reading Reform Foundation conference about why the teaching at St George's CEPS in Wandsworth has made such a difference to the lives of the children who attend the school. This is a school in the most deprived area south of the Thames and yet 100% of its children pass the phonics screening check each year. To learn more, why not watch this inspirational video in which Jan talks to our very own Dr Derrie Clark.
And here's
another video in which Theresa Plummer talks to Derrie.

Sounds~Write programme. Each unit includes: word building; word reading and picture
matching; word reading and spelling; a word search; word matching;
high frequency word practice; tracking; and a short reading and

each unit.
This app offers a variety of activities to develop the skills of
blending and segmenting, sound spelling correspondence, word reading
and writing and some sentences reading and writing. It has been
designed to introduce all the sound-spelling correspondences
children need to put them well on the way to learning to read and
write. It is available from the iTunes app store -
